Refuse taking one in a take-away, festival, bar or cafe. Instead do without or bring your own!
AVOID PLASTIC CUTLERY
Do not pick it up! Instead bring your own washable re-usable set when out and about.

People invented plastic and are millions of products from it, but they did not think ahead about it's disposal and how it is creating environmental / wildlife catastrophes.

PICK UP LITTER
Think of a personalised motto which will motivate you for the sake of wildlife such as:
"If I don't pick this up it could end up fed to an Albatross"
"If I don't pick this up it could drown a Bumble Bee"
"If I don't pick this up it could strangle a Seal."
Carry a spare bag with you to put the litter in. Recycle what you can.
Dispose of the rest responsibly.
Remember that the small pieces can also be lethal. Pick up at least 5 pieces a day.
Join a Litter Pick! (also a good way to meet like-minded people and enjoy working together).
Teach children by example, explain why.
The short time it takes you to collect some litter could save untold suffering and is helping to keep our earth, land, sea, mountains beautiful!
DON'T BE TEMPTED TO DROP LITTER!
When people drop litter they are clearly not thinking as to what will become of it. The mentality can only be one of:

'out of sight, out of mind'

'someone else can clear up after me' or
-
'the earth is my rubbish bin'
And yet that litter frequently does untold harm, even each traps to wildlife, such as:

the empty can attracts insects who are attracted by the smell of whatever was in it. They slither in and drown in the dregs of the drink and more follow

an empty crisp packet fills up with rainwater. Then a bumble bee flies into it or beetles crawl into it, attracted by the smell, gets trapped and drowns

cigarette ends are toxic to wildlife especially if they end up in water.

MAKE WINDOWS VISIBLE TO BIRDS
Use stickers or hangings to make windows visible to birds.
Try not to park too close to the building as this can make the hazard less visible and harder for a fast flying bird calculate for.
Pay especial attention to any windows which have claimed casualties or lives.
DRIVE WITH VIGILANCE
Drive alert to the risk of wildlife, even more so at dusk and dawn.
Brake and slow down to avoid collision if it is safe to do so.
Holding a steady speed slow speed also can allow a bird or animal to gauge better how
to avoid you.
Notice if it is just one bird/animal or if there are more. Allow a whole group to cross the road if your slowing is not going to cause an accident.
